Report 5: Require Learner Participation
Student Engagement
On both days of the station rotation, active mental engagement was required of the learners. Observable performance included taking notes while watching the videos, solving problems and submitting on DeltaMath, problem solving and talking with the instructor, and manipulating a card sort. Unobservable performance included practicing the examples from the video lesson (mental math).
Feedback
Constant feedback is built into the structure of the lesson. Station 2, DeltaMath, gives immediate feedback to every single problem as they are submitted one at a time – students know immediately if they got the problem correct or not. If not, then the program will give them another attempt. Then, if they still get the problem incorrect, it will show them the solution (all worked out with steps). This is invaluable as it is personal and immediate, which would be much harder for an instructor to accomplish in a large classroom full of students. Additionally, the digital version of the card sort gives immediate feedback (and the physical is self-checking in that it should create a loop). The small group station with the teacher allowed me to give individual face-to-face feedback to every single student. A follow up activity included a short formative quiz the next class, that allowed me to separate the students into groups based upon mastery so I could further reinforce student learning.
