Blended Learning Activity Project

Report 2: State Standards and Objectives

The following standards and objectives have been identified for the learners described in Part 1 of the Blended Learning Activity Project. Because the course is an Algebra 3 class, there are no official state standards. However, a blend of Algebra 2 and Precalculus standards are chosen dependent upon the prior knowledge and needs of the learners. For this particular groups of students, the following standards have been identified.

South Carolina College & Career Ready Content Standard:

PCGSRT.11: Use the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to solve for unknown measures of sides and angles of triangles that arise in mathematical and real-world problems.

South Carolina College & Career Ready Process Standards:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason both contextually and abstractly.
  3. Use a variety of mathematical tools effectively and strategically.

Using the state standards above, I have created the list of objectives below, focusing on the audience, behavior, conditions, and degree.

Objectives:

  • Given a word problem, students will be able to draw an appropriately labeled diagram of the problem with 90% accuracy.
  • Given a word problem or diagram, students will be able to identify whether it is necessary to use the Law of Sines or the Law of Cosines to solve the problem with 95% accuracy.
  • Given a word problem or diagram, students will be able to apply the Law of Sines or Law of Cosines to correctly solve for the missing side/angle with 95% accuracy.
  • Given 15 minutes and access to their notebooks, students will be able to solve three word problems using the Law of Sines or Law of Cosines with 90% accuracy.

These objectives will be taught over 2 days (two 90 minute blocks) totaling close to 3 hours of instructional time.
